Regular and proper tooth brushing is a fundamental measure of oral hygiene and an essential step in preventing both tooth decay and gum disease. However, only a small number of adults are familiar with the correct brushing technique. Brushing should take at least 3 to 5 minutes, during which food particles, plaque, and bacteria are removed from the surfaces of the teeth through proper brushing motions.
Step-by-Step Technique
-
Start with the back teeth
-
Position the toothbrush horizontally on the outer surface of the teeth
-
Angle the bristles at 45° toward the gum line
-
With gentle pressure, rotate the brush downward
-
Cover 2–3 teeth at a time, repeating the motion at least 8 times
-
Move gradually toward the center of the jaw
-
-
Repeat for the lower jaw
-
Use upward strokes instead of downward
-
Avoid strong pressure or side-to-side scrubbing, which may damage the tooth surface near the neck
-
-
Clean the inner surfaces
-
Use the same horizontal technique for molars and premolars
-
On the upper jaw, brush downward; on the lower jaw, brush upward
-
For front teeth, hold the toothbrush vertically and use up-and-down strokes
-
-
Finish with the chewing surfaces
-
Use short back-and-forth strokes to clean thoroughly
